VHF MARINE RADIO (SRC) - SHORT RANGE CERTIFICATE
The SRC Radio Course is an essential training program for all pleasure boaters, equipping you with the critical skills needed to operate a marine VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This includes both Fixed and Handheld equipment, using International Channels. You will be taught through a mixture of theory and practical learning. The course ends with an assessment for the certificate, which is required for the operator’s license. Our course-completion certificate is issued without an expiry date — we don’t require you to retake the course.
This course ensures you can:
- Call for help in distress situations
- Communicate effectively with marinas and other vessels
- Understand essential safety equipment, including EPIRBs, PLBs, and SARTs
Please note that participants should have a basic understanding of English in order to follow the course and participate in the exercises.
Method of assessment:
There will be a short written and practical exam at our training centre, carried out by an RYA SRC assessor.
- Written Theory Assessment: A 30-minute closed-book paper consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. You will be tested on your knowledge of distress procedures, GMDSS components, VHF radio frequencies, and legal requirements.
- Practical Assessment: A hands-on test using live-simulator training radios. You will be asked to demonstrate radio competence, including sending a routine DSC alert, making voice calls, and correctly executing emergency procedures (Mayday, Pan Pan, and Securite).
Minimum requirements for the web-based training:
- PC running Windows 10 minimum with the latest version of Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Firefox.
- Mac running 10.13 minimum with the latest version of Safari, Google Chrome or Firefox
- iPad running iOS 11 minimum using Safari.
- Android tablet running 4.1 minimum using Google Chrome.
Legal Requirement:
If you own a boat with a VHF radio on board, this qualification is legally required. Participants must be age 16 or over.
No previous experience is required to enrol on the VHF course.
You will be sent some pre-course learning that you will need to complete and asked to learn your phonetic alphabet, before the start of the course.
Please note that a separate VHF Exam Fee is payable online to the RYA before the start of your course. See our pricing overview on the Costs page.
You will receive details of how to do this in your booking confirmation, or we can do that for you. Your details will be shared with the RYA for certification purposes.
Please allow sufficient time for the administration process. The RYA may take approximately 4–6 weeks to process your paperwork. If you also need to register your VHF radio with the RDI (formerly the Radiocommunications Agency) to obtain a Ship Station Licence, please allow approximately 1–2 months for this process.

- RYA SRC examination at the end of the practical training day by an external assessor
